Nice TeethOver the last year, many changes have taken place with the administration of Lyndale Girls’ Home and Swift-Purscell Boys’ Home. The girls’ home was closed for major repairs and has not yet re-opened. Jamaica Outreach has kept in touch with the girls as they scattered in many directions, from other orphanages to foster homes. Recently we made contact with several of our Lyndale Girls at Pringle Children’s Home and have plans to work with this home in the future. The boys’ home has undergone a re-organization and the boys have been placed in various orphanages and foster homes. While our focus continues to be on furthering the education of the girls and boys we’ve worked with at Lyndale and Swift-Purscell, our vision has expanded to the Parish of St. Mary and, specifically, to Pringle Children’s Home.

Over the last eight years, Jamaica Outreach has brought medical and dental teams directly to the girls’ and boys’ homes to service the children, who numbered about 130. With the home closures, our medical and dental teams needed a place to serve.

Once again, through a serendipitous meeting, this time with AmericanCaribbean Experience (ACE) director, Marla Day, the possibility of working through community clinics opened up. Last February we brought our doctor and nurses into ACE’s clinics and brought our orphans from Pringle Children’s Home to the community clinic. It worked out great and truly expanded our vision. Our physician on the mission trips of 2009 and 2010 was Dr. Jane Lykins of Tuscon, Arizona. Not only did she doctor adults and children of St. Mary, but she also went into the “bush” to attend those impoverished people who could not walk to a clinic. Our dentist in February of 2009, Dr. Sharon Minot-Warren, a native Jamaican now living in Houston, brought into ACE’s work the Colgate Dental Van which added new equipment for the dental mission to work with. This new alliance of Jamaica Outreach with ACE and its selfless directors, Marla Day and Dr. Steven Guy, seems blessed and fortuitous for the Jamaican people. Jamaica Outreach is thrilled with this new expansion of its vision.

In February 2011, Jamaica Outreach is anticipating an expanded trip with a number of Colorado high school students. It is the hope and prayer of Jamaica Outreach that we will have a fruitful trip serving the Jamaican youth, particularly the orphans at Pringle Children’s Home.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to work with the youth of St. Mary, in community clinics or area orphanages, please contact us. We’d love to welcome you aboard!
